Proof of funds for a China student visa: the USD 2,500 a year that three embassies ask for, and the lists that do not mention it

Unofficial summary · Sources checked

Whether an X1 student visa application needs a bank statement depends on the mission that handles it. The Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nigeria embassy pages each ask some X1 applicants for proof of funds of USD 2,500 a year, or a scholarship document: Bangladesh for students of institutions of higher education, Pakistan in its X1 entry, and Nigeria for elementary, junior/senior high school students and for university students. The UK, US and India embassy pages, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs general instruction, name no financial document for X1.

What the three embassy pages ask for

Mission (page date) X1 entry: money requirement X2 entry: money requirement
Bangladesh (12 September 2025) For students of institutions of higher education: scholarship proof, or a bank statement showing at least USD 2,500 each year for self-funded applicants The X2 row lists no document
Pakistan (28 April 2025) Scholarship evidence, or proof of USD 2,500 per academic year or the equivalent in Pakistan rupees; the closing balance should cover all years of study The X2 row lists no document
Nigeria (6 September 2024) Elementary, junior/senior high school students and university students: proof of funds of 2500 dollars a year, or a scholarship certificate Proof of funds of 2500 dollars a year, or a scholarship certificate

The Bangladesh page says that applicants with scholarship support should provide relevant proof, and that self-funded applicants shall submit a bank statement proving at least 2,500 USD each year of study in China. The Pakistan page states the figure as "US$2,500 per academic year or equivalent Pakistan Rupees" and asks that the closing balance of the bank statement of the financial supporter be enough to cover the student's whole study years in China. The Nigeria page lists proof of funds in item ② of its elementary and secondary school X1 list and item ④ of its university X1 list, and item ④ of its X2 list. The Nigeria X1 list for Chinese government aided students and the one for medical internship applicants do not include proof of funds. The Nigeria guidelines are written for Nigerian citizens.

The three X2 cells are not the same. The Bangladesh and Pakistan X2 rows name no documents: each gives only a description of who the visa is for, with nothing in the documents cell. The Nigeria X2 list does ask for proof of funds.

The lists that name no financial document for X1

UK. The X1 entry of the UK embassy page, "How to Apply for a Visa for China (Mainland only)", lists the admission letter, the JW201 or JW202 form, and the confirmation form for elementary stage students. Its basic documents ask non-British applicants for proof of legal stay, residence, employment or study. That is a status document, not a funds document. The page carries a 2020 date stamp, so check the embassy's current version before relying on it.

US. The X1 row of the notice, "Requirements and Procedures for Chinese Visa Application (Updated September, 2025)", lists the JW201 or JW202 confirmation form and a photocopy of the admission letter for higher education students, and the elementary stage confirmation form for younger students. The basic document list gives a bank bill as one example of proof of residence. That is a residence document, and the X1 row names no financial document.

India. The X1 row of the August 2024 notice lists the original and a photocopy of the admission letter, and a photocopy of the JW201 or JW202 form. The reminders in section 2.3 mention "financial source for expenditures" as an item an invitation letter should contain. The X1 row does not ask for an invitation letter.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The general instruction, "Visa Application Instructions of the People's Republic of China", lists the admission letter and the JW201 or JW202 form under X1. Its section on basic documents refers to proof of legal stay or residence. It also asks for its basic documents "as required by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General in your locality", so check that mission's own page for your application.

What the Law and the Regulations say

Article 21(4) of the Exit and Entry Administration Law provides that visas shall not be issued to foreigners who resort to fraudulent acts in the visa application or who cannot guarantee expected expenditures during their stay in China. The Law speaks of foreigners in general. Neither Article 21 of the Law nor Article 7 of the Regulations on Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners (State Council Decree No. 637) states an amount.

Article 7 of the Regulations, final paragraph, says that the visa authority may, in light of specific cases, require a foreigner to submit additional application material. That paragraph allows a mission to ask for more material in a particular case. It does not name a document. Article 7(11) lists the X1 documents as the admission notice issued by the admission institution and the certification documents provided by the competent authority. It states no amount.

The USD 2,500 figure therefore comes from the three embassy pages named above. It is not a figure in the Law or the Regulations.

How to find the list that applies to you

  1. Identify the place where you live.
  2. Find the mission that covers that place.
  3. Open that mission's current visa page.
  4. Read the X1 entry and its document list.
  5. Check the Ministry's instruction for the general categories.

The India page assigns applicants by residence: applicants in Maharashtra or Karnataka go to the Consulate-General in Mumbai, applicants in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chattisgarh and West Bengal go to the Consulate-General in Kolkata, and applicants elsewhere go to the Embassy in India. The US notice lists the states within the Embassy's consular jurisdiction and asks applicants to confirm that they live in those states before they apply. For more on the document lists in general, see the documents page.

Questions people ask
